North St. Louis authorities have identified the victim in a fatal shooting that occurred on Christmas night as 26-year-old Malik Holmes. Police were called to the 5100 block of Northland Avenue late Christmas evening after receiving reports of gunfire in the area.
According to investigators, officers arriving at the scene found Holmes suffering from multiple gunshot injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment but later died from his injuries. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Division has assumed responsibility for the investigation. Detectives are working to determine the events that led up to the shooting, including examining physical evidence from the scene and canvassing the surrounding area for potential witnesses and surveillance footage.
Police officials stated that they do not believe this incident is connected to an earlier call involving reports of gunfire and a vehicle crash near Kingshighway and Northland that occurred earlier in the night. Authorities emphasized that the two situations appear to be separate and unrelated.
At this time, no suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been announced. Investigators are asking anyone with information that may help the investigation to contact police or submit tips anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
As the investigation continues, members of the community have extended condolences to Malik Holmes’ family and friends as they mourn the loss of a young life during what is typically a time of celebration and togetherness.
