A dystopian surveillance state is what many Americans fear their country is becoming, while others believe that widespread monitoring has already become a permanent part of daily life. Over time, some people have grown accustomed to living under constant observation, accepting it as the past, present, and future reality.

“There comes a point where, as a society, we just end up getting used to the massive surveillance state that we live in,” said Jason Buttrill, head researcher for Glenn Beck and a former Department of Defense intelligence analyst, during a recent discussion.

While large-scale surveillance has become normalized, questions are being raised about how effective it actually is—particularly following the response to a recent shooting at Brown University.

On Saturday, December 13, a gunman opened fire inside a first-floor classroom at the Barus and Holley building on Brown University’s campus. Despite an extensive law enforcement response, the individual responsible has not been publicly identified, and authorities have not announced an arrest.

Buttrill noted that as far back as 2021, reports described Brown University as one of the most heavily monitored campuses in the United States. That history has led to renewed scrutiny over how surveillance systems are being used.

“How is it we only have one image of the suspect, and it’s from behind?” Glenn Beck questioned during the discussion, pointing out how limited publicly available information appears to be.

The conversation highlighted broader concerns about whether surveillance tools are truly effective in preventing or resolving serious incidents. According to Buttrill, even advanced monitoring measures may have limitations, especially when suspects take steps to obscure their appearance.

He also referenced comments attributed to FBI Director Kash Patel, who stated that federal authorities activated cellphone monitoring systems as part of the investigation. However, Buttrill argued that these efforts did not lead to clear results and may have contributed to initial confusion.

The situation has fueled ongoing debate about the balance between privacy and security, with critics questioning whether expansive surveillance systems provide the protection they are intended to deliver. As the investigation continues, the incident at Brown University remains a focal point in discussions about the effectiveness and consequences of modern surveillance practices.
