Decatur Community Grieves the loss of seventh-grade student Treb McKinnon, who passed away following a side-by-side ATV accident on Saturday afternoon. The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the 300 block of County Road 3250 and left three other juveniles injured, bringing deep sadness to families, classmates, and school staff.

Decatur ISD shared the heartbreaking news on Sunday, expressing sorrow and encouraging the community to keep the McKinnon family in their thoughts and prayers. The district emphasized its commitment to supporting students and families during this difficult time.

According to Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger, four juveniles were riding in the off-road vehicle when it crashed. Emergency crews from Wise County EMS, the Decatur Fire Department, and the Wise County Fire Marshal’s Office responded quickly. Treb and two other juveniles were transported to Medical City Decatur, with one later flown to Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth for critical care. Another juvenile was treated for serious injuries, while a fourth received minor injuries and did not require ambulance transport.

To support grieving students and families, First Baptist Church in Decatur will open its doors on November 30 as a space for the community to gather, reflect, and find comfort. Additionally, Decatur ISD has announced that counselors will be available at McCarroll Middle School beginning Monday, December 1, to assist students, staff, and families as they return to classes.

Superintendent Taylor Williams and Principal Brandi Shisler noted that returning to school after such a loss will be emotionally challenging. They encouraged families to lean on available resources and communicate openly as students process their feelings.

For those seeking further support, Wise County Christian Counseling is available by phone or through its website.

Treb McKinnon is being remembered as a beloved son, grandson, friend, and classmate whose kindness and bright personality touched many lives. His loss has created a deep impact throughout Decatur, where the community continues to show unwavering support for his family during this unimaginable time.
